Devices for the operation of xenon lamps are devices designed to ensure their operability (ignition units and other equipment directly serving the operation of xenon lamps).

Paragraph 3.4 of Chapter 3 of the Fault list:

On light devices there are no diffusers or diffusers and lamps are used that do not correspond to the type of this light device.

Gas-discharge light sources (including xenon), the category marking indicated on the cap begins with the letter "D" in accordance with the requirements of UNECE Regulation N 99 and GOST R 41.99-99 "Uniform provisions concerning the approval of gas-discharge sources lights for use in officially approved gas-discharge optical elements of motor vehicles "are intended for use only in headlamps of the types DC, DR, DCR.

Based on the explanations of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise “Research and Experimental Institute of Automotive Electronics and Electrical Equipment” (NIIEA), the use of external sources of light sources that do not correspond to the type of this light device violates the conditions for ensuring road safety due to a number of physical (dimensions of spark discharge, length waves, scattering angle of reflected radiation) and technical (class of reflective surface of the reflector, the presence of automatic orrektora beam headlights and washer) factors.

Thus, the use in headlamps intended for use with incandescent lamps, including halogen, of gas-discharge light sources should be qualified as a mismatch of the operating mode of external light devices (a set of technical characteristics of the headlights corresponding to one or another light distribution that ensures road safety, depending on traffic situation and weather conditions) vehicle design requirements.
Accordingly, LED lamps in headlights are prohibited.

Having searched the Internet, I found information that it is possible to inspect cars for headlights in which installation of xenon is not allowed only at stationary posts, but knowing our traffic police will get to wherever possible.

According to the explanations of the Department of Road Traffic Safety of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, “the compliance of external lighting devices with the established requirements is monitored by the state inspector of technical supervision both during the state technical inspection and when he checks the technical condition of vehicles during the supervision of traffic”.

Important: The team mate of the inspector cannot be understood, as he is an interested person.

In the event that the inspector indicates his partner as a witness, we report this from a mobile phone to 112 and report any violations. In the future, it is possible to prepare a complaint to the prosecutor's office and the chief of these inspectors.

7. In the column “Responsibilities and Rights Explained”, indicate “Rights and Obligations Not Explained” - put down a signature (if this is true).

Important: The inspector is obliged to explain the rights to you, and not to indicate that you read them independently on the back. At the request of the driver, the inspector must clarify the procedure for appealing against his actions, inform the location and phone number of the duty or responsible official.

8. When filling out the protocol, in the column “explanations of the person” we indicate, “I do not agree with the alleged violation. I demand the help of a lawyer. ”

First, let’s try to compare LED lamps with classic halogens and bi-xenon in principle:

Yeah ... Judging by the table, the LED by light parameters confidently bypasses xenon, leaving far from the last quality far behind the halogen. Perhaps this is the reason for so many enthusiastic impressions of LED lighting on the car? - The LED really shines brighter than an ordinary halogen incandescent bulb. But is happiness only in brightness?

For the average layman, lamps of head light are perceived no more than a light bulb in a toilet - the brighter, the cooler. With automotive light, everything is much more serious and more complicated: in addition to the brightness itself, the geometry of the light beam also plays a very important role. How you will see this road in the dark depends on how a light spot is formed on the road.

To make it easier to understand all kinds of designs presented in the review of lamps, a bit of theory about H4 lamps:

Principle of operation of lamps H4 low / high beam

In mode " high beam»The headlight shines on the principle of an ordinary spotlight: the spiral of the lamp is in the focus of the parabolic reflector, forming at the output a uniform beam of light parallel to the road, using the entire surface of the reflector. In the review, I deliberately do not indicate sellers, but being guided by the design of the lamps themselves, I think you can meet them not only on AliExpress, but also in other places.

By and large, this is not even a model, but an example of what in no case you can’t buyas it’s a lamp for anything but not for head light that the seller there would not "rub". Such an arrangement of LEDs is suitable only for lights, reverse, etc., but for this there are corresponding lamps in the corresponding base. The emitting crystals of this lamp are located anywhere, but not at key focal points, which means it will also shine anywhere, but not on the road, and the lens will not play a special role here. The absence of at least any radiator can only speak of extremely low power  for a lamp of this purpose. Even if the lamp will give out at least half the required power, it simply overheats and burns out very quickly.

The LEDs are powered by an external driver, and the aluminum case provides heat transfer to the heatsink with active cooling. The cooling fan is quiet enough. In most cases, they become standard ones without problems, sometimes, however, a very smart on-board electronics does not want to understand them, but this is solved by installing a “snag” load resistor An additional resistor connected in parallel to the LED lamp to simulate the standard value of the current consumption. It is necessary for the correct operation of the electronics, which monitors the condition of the lamps. Since the resistor increases the current to the standard, its installation negates the whole idea of \u200b\u200befficiency. .

For dipped beam, 2 LED chips are used, located for some reason across the optical axis, although in ordinary headlight lamps, spirals have a longitudinal orientation. In high beam mode, another chip is connected, located at the focus of the reflector. It turns out that the lamp uses only the upper part of the headlight reflector for high beam, completely ignoring the lower one. As a result, the lamp gives smeared neighbor  without a clear border and check mark, more or less illuminating the road at a distance of 10 ... 15m. The distant quality is obtained somewhere between “ mediocre”And“ no" More precisely, this is not a distant one, but a little “amplified" one - it shines a little brighter and a little higher, even oncoming cars do not blink for the main beam. Some wiseacres stupidly slightly lower the headlight and always drive far. Yes, in the enthusiastic photos of buyers, the headlight itself with such a lamp looks very bright, but there really is little use for it on the road.

The lamp is similar in design to the previous sample, but with refinement. For high beams, an additional 4th chip is installed below. Above and below near the LEDs, a reflector has also been added for the full use of the light flux from the LEDs. As the seller assures, the LEDs are located exactly on the same line with the locations of the spirals of a standard lamp. Thus, for the main beam we get the full use of the reflector. However, although on the same line, but still taking into account the thickness of the base, the LEDs are not on the same axis, but are shifted up and down, and for the dipped beam they are also located across the axis, and not along. Of course, this situation affects the focus, not in the best way. In low beam mode, only 2 high side chips operate on the low beam helix line. In the driving mode, 2 chips are still connected to the top and bottom on the high beam line, i.e. really it’s “far + near”. On the near upper border more or less betrays, but, of course, without a tick.



The representative lamp has 2 pairs of LEDs and provides greater brightness in the high beam mode - 20/40 W  and 2000/4000 LM. Cost approximately 55 c.u.  per set. The lamp has an external driver and active cooling.

LED layout has vertical  separation - the chips are located to the left and right of the board. A pair of high-beam LEDs is approximately in focus and shines on the top and bottom of the reflector. The pair for the dipped beam is located near a small shift from the focus up and closer, while it also shines on the top and bottom of the reflector, forming the same spot as for the main beam, only the light beam is directed slightly downward. In fact, the lamp simply works in either “far ahead” mode or in the “far in front of the car” mode. With this design, in principle, there is no need to speak about any clear border of the spot for the passing beam, and indeed about the correct formation of the spot itself. The lamp shines brightly only close in front of the machine, leaving a dark curb.



   Halogens and LED lamps on Nissan: LED shines as it should

As you can see in the illustration, the lamps even in decent optics on Nissan shine even brightly, but they shine wherever they want - in the dipped beam there is no border or a characteristic “tick” - just a fuss.

The lamp also has a vertical layout, but the LEDs for the dipped beam are not even shifted upward relative to the axis, i.e. the light beam in the dipped beam does not move anywhere at all, but simply defocuses and loses half the power. The picture of the light-shadow border is even sadder than that of the previous sample. We will not even dwell on it, although to someone these lamps “just hurt yourself, how they shine brightly”, and where they shine, this is already the tenth matter.

The general picture is complemented by a simple driver that actively clogs the radio with interference.

There are also completely similar lamps on the Chinese market, but ALL LEDs are offset upwards from the axis. We get the same effect, only with the flow down.



But this is already interesting! Vertical layout as in the 3rd sample, but with screen curtain  for low beam. The cost of a kit on AliExpress is about 50 cu. The lamp kit includes a filter sleeve that allows you to lower the color temperature to 3000K (yellow).

The lamps are made on the basis of 4 CREE XM-L2 LEDs and when consumed 40 W, they should give out as much as 4500 (!) All the same “Chinese” Lm. Probably, in China they invented how to drive out 120% efficiency from the “state” LEDs. As they say, you can’t embellish it - you can’t sell it. As with other samples, when you turn on the far one, the 2nd beam simply turns on and complements the beam for the near one. The presence of screens for the dipped beam nevertheless significantly improves the situation with the line of the light-shadow border - now, in principle, it has somehow drawn, although it is very far from the truth. Instead of the classic checkmark, a rough, sometimes humpbacked, horizontal border is obtained. Accordingly, the right side of the road is poorly lit, only the brightness “pulls” the situation, greater than the halogens.

The presented lamp with a power of 20 / 40W should give out all the same 2000/4000   Lm, respectively for dipped and main beam. The source of light is 4 LED-plates made by COB technology, 10 W each. Only the upper pair works on the near one, illuminating about 200 ° of the reflector. At the far light, all four shine, providing full illumination of the reflector at full power. As can be clearly seen in the illustration, the light source is not a point source, but a whole plate of 18 LEDs, in addition offset from the longitudinal axis by almost 7mm. What focus and clear light spot can we talk about in this case? In addition, it can be seen that different sellers have differently oriented pairs of plates for the dipped and main beam: in some cases, the top and bottom are opposite. In this case, the platinum for the dipped beam is in the focal plane of the main beam and vice versa - with the illumination of the road, a complete “vinaigrette” will be obtained.



Another example of a “bulky” lamp, but not on 4, but on 3 sides - 2 chips on the near and +1 for the far. The characteristics of the lamp are quite expected - 24/36 W and 2400/3600 “Chinese” Lm.

Structurally, it turned out something in between Sample 1 and 7, combining their common limitations. Although the lamp provides uniform circular illumination of the reflector, the same problem is with geometry.

Light sources are LED plates, consisting of 27 LEDs, and offset from the focal axis. One does not have to wait for any focusing of the light beam - there is a lot of traffic on the road. Maybe, of course, for the ATV it will somehow fit, but not for the track.

Sample 9 - LED H4 G6



An interesting, in my opinion, sample is a lamp sixth generation G6  with combined LED design. A pair of super-LEDs are used in the dipped beam Cree xhp50  under the lens, and on the far - Luxeon mz  without a lens. To form a light-shadow border on the near, a curtain-screen is provided. The lamp should shine on 3000lm  at power 25Whas a built-in driver and heatsink for passive cooling.

The energy efficiency of the lamp is 125Lm / W, which looks quite plausible, since the efficiency of the chips used is up to 149Lm / W. In theory, the Cree XHP50 alone can deliver almost 2500Lm per 19W. It turns out that the LEDs work comfortably in full heat, which means without undermining their health.

The color temperature of the glow, like the rest of the lamps 6000K. What is noteworthy, the lamp in the kit has several yellow and blue film-filters to give the luminous flux the desired temperature from 3000 to 10000K.

Sample 10 - LED H4 G7



Having seen enough of all kinds of wonders of the Chinese industry in the field of production of LED lamps for the head light of a car, lastly, I want to especially note our latest model. Introduced LED Lamp seventh generation 7G - A sample of the maximum imitation of the design and principle of operation of the glow halogen. The lamp is built on the basis of 16 tiny LEDs Lumileds LUXEON Z ES (ZES). The LEDs are aligned along the optical axis and are positioned exactly in the same places as the spirals of a conventional lamp, and thanks to the miniature dimensions of 1.6 mm, maximum similarity to the incandescent spiral is created. Even the switching principle is preserved - groups of LEDs work separately and alternately for the dipped and main beam. A group of LEDs for low beam, as expected, covers the curtain. The prototype of the lamp, apparently, was the original Philips Ultinon H4 lamp for 12 chips.

The retail price of the kit in Ukraine started from about 80 ... 85 cu, now on AliExpress you can already buy for about 65 c.u.. However, if desired, in Ukraine, these lamps can also be found at this price.

   LED H4 7G compared to conventional halogen - light elements in place

Lamp cooling - passive, apparently due to low power consumption 24W. On the one hand, the absence of a fan eliminates overheating of the lamp due to its breakdown, but on the other hand, it makes more stringent requirements for cooling the radiator itself. The radiator can be turned upside down and screwed onto the case, reducing the total length of the product by almost 6.5 mm. It should be noted that the thread is lubricated with heat-conducting paste, which is especially useful for harsh temperature conditions.

The lamp shines equally brightly in both modes, but there is a certain disagreement about this. According to some sources, the lamp gives out 2000/2000 Lm, according to others 4000/4000, and some simply write one digit 4000 Lm. The manufacturer’s website clearly shows a typical brightness of 245Lm per chip at a nominal current of 700mA, i.e. with 8 chips we get a total of almost 2000Lm. However, when the current increases to a maximum of 1200 mA, the brightness increases by 1.5 times, thus, we can assume that the actual brightness of the lamp is slightly less 3000lm . We will get approximately the same figure if we multiply the actual maximum efficiency by 125 Lm / W by the lamp power. What sellers write about 160Lm / W - to put it mildly, simply does not correspond to reality. Especially touching are the numbers in the headings of some ads: 80W and 5000Lm per lamp - people, be careful and prudent.

In the low beam mode, the lamp forms a light spot with a fairly clear upper light-shadow border in the form of a classic checkmark, but the daw turns out to be symmetrical and this is not casual. According to the manufacturer’s idea, the lamp design is universal and designed for both right-hand and left-hand traffic, and for the last checkmark should be raised not on the right, but on the left. Therefore, to form the correct angle of inclination of the check mark, the lamp is adjusted around its axis. You just need to loosen the locking screws and turn the lamp a little around its axis, so that one shoulder of the tick lies horizontally - and here it is, the correct shape of the light spot. It would be convenient to regulate the risks, even on the base plate.

It can be safely stated that the last instance presented is an example of the optimal combination of design and technological innovations. The product is quite young and the price for it is a little “biting”, but this is only a matter of time.

It took a little more than six months, and on the market inspired by the idea of \u200b\u200busing miniature LEDs Philips Luxeon  all kinds of clones, replicas, modifications and variations on the theme began to appear like mushrooms after rain LED H4 G7.

Like the original version, this sample for 70   American "ground" on the same chips, but a slightly different design. Basically, almost everything is the same: the same arrangement of LED groups, the same calculation for both left- and right-hand traffic. However, the cooling is active, and the design itself somehow looks “simpler." The sellers are clearly bad with arithmetic: at the input 12B and 1.6A, “miraculously” turns into 24W of light at the output! Although, who knows, maybe it's just a super-development of Shanghai inventors?



Another option on the G7 ... For 40 ... 50 cu nothing new, fewer chips, more power, less efficiency. Cooling is active. A huge dazzle curtain partially overlaps a group of LEDs for high beams, while at the same time it does not completely close the dipped LEDs. It is not difficult to imagine that the light-shadow picture will be disturbed.



The lamp appeared on the market recently. One could say that this is another clone of LED H4 G7, but this is not entirely true. The principle of the arrangement of LED groups is the same, but the chips are already completely different. As high-power LED emitters, absolutely caseless (phosphor-coated semiconductor even without a substrate) chips are used WICOP2 Z8 Y19  Korean company Seoul semiconductor". Miniature chips with a size of 1.8 mm have very remarkable parameters, not inferior to the LUXEON Z-ES.

Lamp parameters are the same: 25W  and 2000lm alternately  per group near or far (only 4000Lm per lamp) - given the characteristics of the chips used, it sounds quite believable. The color temperature of the light somewhere 6000 ... 6500K. The lamp driver is built-in, cooling is passive, there is no possibility to adjust the angle of inclination of the STG. The lamp kit comes in a beautiful retail box.

The cost on AliExpress is about 40 cu, in Ukraine very few sellers offer 50 ... 60 cu On Ali, you can find the same lamps with no name-affinity in a simple black box.

Black-and-white border (STG) NightEye H4 looks very realistically similar to a classic halogen checkmark, the upper border is just a little smeared, and everything is very “bundled”.





As you can see in the photo, the brightness of the LED is visually not just much greater than the halogen - LED light, in principle, fills the space in front of the hood and is much more intense along the curbs.

However, not everything is as smooth as it seems: flaws passive cooling  make themselves felt. That the lamp would not burn out from an overheat electronics reduces  real power is almost 2 times! Detailed description and testing Nighteye h4  - in a separate review .



More recently, another option was drawn on the Luxeon ZES LEDs, but with its own kind of creative vision. The dipped beam is still the same, only there are less diodes - 6 instead of 8, as usual, but the far light is even smaller - only 4 and are located not along the axis, but across. That's so original. Accordingly, the power is 20W per mode, and not 25. Luminous flux, in theory - 2250Lm - with fewer LEDs and lower power, we get efficiency on the verge of fiction. Passive cooling, but the radiator, contrary to the laws of physics, is not black at all, but silver. But in the kit there are yellow and blue films for changing the glow temperature. The lamp has an adjustment of the inclination of the STG.

The lamps are packed in a stylish box with the logo " X1". Price for Aliexpress from 42 c.u.  before 65 c.u.



So they waited - the next one, eighth generation  led bulbs G8. The presented sample is not so revolutionary stands out as the seventh generation lamps with maximum imitation under the filament. Rather reminds one more variation of lamps sixth generation.

Unlike the G6 with a combined design of the LED block, in the new lamps everything is done on the same chips Cree xhp50  both for the passing beam and the driving beam. The radiator has become much smaller, but with a fan for active cooling. The light flow is promised as much as 3000Lm from one lamp alternately to the near and far ones with a power of 36W. The external driver seems to be used the same as for the LED H4 G7 model, but non-removable. To correct the STG, an adjustment of the lamp installation angle is provided.

What is noteworthy, the lamps are packaged in boxes with the same blue and white design as the LED H4 G7 lamps.

Sample 14 - Two-tone LED H4 G7



Quite recently, there was an inter modification  already become "classic" lamps LED H4 G7. The design, housing and even packaging are all the same. The number of chips was reduced from 16 to 12, as in the original Philips lamps, while the lighting parameters of the lamp remained the same - all the same 25W and 2000Lm with single lamp. By reducing the number of chips, the size of the light source has become more compact, but apparently due to the more intensive use of LEDs. But this is not even interesting.

LEDs used in the lamp different color shade : white  (6500K) - for near  light and yellow  (3000K) for far. What can give such a color focus, besides the fact that it is “cool”? I think for many it is no secret that in fog / rain / snow, etc. it is better to use yellow foglights than the white near, and even more distant. Due to the longer wavelength, yellow light is better “squeezed” between atmospheric inclusions, less diffused and blinds the driver himself. Apparently, the idea of \u200b\u200bthe authors is to be able to use high beams in a foggy setting.

Offering lamps is by no means cheap: under the trademarks " Oslamp"And" Auxmart»On Aliexpress they can be bought at approximately 85 cu  per set.

RESULTS

As expected, far “not all yogurts are equally useful”! The euphoria from the sight of a super bright lamp in the headlights can easily be replaced by disappointment after traveling in real road conditions. All the samples presented in the review from the outside look very bright and impressive, but only a few provide normal lighting of the road. Acceptable results show lamps starting with sixth generation lamps, and lamps LED H4 G7  made with the closest design to halogen lamps.

Exposing the myth of the effectiveness of LED lamps into the head light.

I warn you right away - this article is not some kind of scientific test, research with confirmation, refutation. These are just our own conclusions, observations, supported by successful-unsuccessful experience) Any reasoned  criticism is welcome)

But with what fright do diode bulbs shine “closer” than a halogen? After all, the light source (diode) is in the same place, in the focus of the lens, otherwise it would shine with a bias to the left to the right ... Although ... Maybe there is a bias, for example, upward relative to the focus of the lens, and it turns out the headlight shines under your nose? This is the first theory.

However, my second theory may be more interesting.
Surely, someone at home had crystal chandeliers? And if you turn them on, then the light from the crystal was reflected by such small glare on the wall and it turned out beautifully) But it was worth screwing a lamp into such a chandelier, which has a dull bulb, then ... all the beauty and all the glare of the crystal disappeared and it turned out a lamp with spangles hanging on it )

How it happened - but it's simple - in the case of a transparent bulb, our source of light was a small filament, it shone in all directions - upside down, in short - with a ball. The light from the filament of the lens could break. In the case of the opaque flask, the source was the huge flask itself, which, moreover, was not shining in all directions, but let us say only up.

The key word is not in all directions.

If we look at how the LED lamp shines, we will see that only on the sides. That is, the angle of coverage, not 360 degrees or a ball, but only on the sides or like two cardioids. Most likely, the short range of the headlight is due to the fact that the light does not get into those parts of the lens.

The artist is crooked of me, but the idea can be understood - a headlamp, front view, in the center is a bar with diodes located on it, which shine on the sides. Above and below, marked in blue, we have low-light areas of the lens. If there is a lamp with a thread, then the light from it will spread in all directions inside the lens.


Someone will attribute this to a lamp defect? I decided to check out one more lamp, and supposedly a more powerful model with 2 options - with a nozzle for breaking the light by 360 degrees and without ...

It is just as bright, it is also evident that the lens glow itself is weaker than with a standard halogen, the same sharp STG without light from above, the same short range of 5-7 meters ...
And by the way, is it written that 3600 lumens, that is brighter than one xenon lamp? No matter how - the brightness I would say is similar, but I don’t know what the Chinese measure it with)

One thing is good - the distant one with these diode lamps is really powerful, but damn it ... as I wrote earlier, do I need a distant one in the city? I drive 90 percent with my neighbor, the rest is yes, country roads.

By the way, if someone writes off such a feature of the lamps to my lens - here's a link to the post of a person who also put diode lamps in the halogen lens of a Skoda Fabia. The same signs - sharp STH, bright light under the nose and short-range.

What to do? Never mind! A friend advised to raise the headlights higher so that they would shine further ... Yeah, and at the same time to dazzle the neighbors)
I successfully sold those lamps with a soft radiator to another person for high beams - he says that he is satisfied.

You can of course wait until the LED lamps come out, which will evenly illuminate the space around you with a ball, and not only from 2 sides ... In general, progress does not stand still, maybe in a year or two and we will see such lamps)

So do not repeat my mistakes and do not buy LED lamps in the head light yet) Unless of course you travel with them for a couple of days and are not sure of them 200%

According to numerous requests and responses, I can say that there are LED lamps that really fall into the focus of the reflector - CL7 PREMIUM well, or if finances are reduced - then CL6.
